Maureen Dowd wrote an article in the New York Times recently on the "sudden" influx of chick-lit genre fiction. Sarahbeth was among a handful of modern female writers asked to respond. Read her informed, witty reply here.

Also, the week of February 26-March 2 is Read Me Week in Nashville, and also the week of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. In recognition and celebration, Sarahbeth has been asked to participate in a few festivities including reading some of her favorite stories to children and speaking about being an author. These engagements will take place next week at local schools, including East Academy and at Carter-Lawrence Elementary Magnet school.

Sarahbeth is flattered to have been included in Better Tommorrows 1st Annual Literary Crawl fundraiser held August 6th. The richly literary nature of the city of Nashville (underestimated by most) and its talented and critically acclaimed authors were center stage on this evening where participants traveled all over the city for a very good cause. From Bongo Java to Rumours Wine and Art Bar to Davis Kidd Booksellers, participants were whisked all over the city to listen to works read aloud by journalists and actors from authors including Langston Hughes, Corra Harris, Mary Mufree and Sarahbeth among others!

And in BIG Debut December news...

You all know about Sarahbeth's work as an author, but did you know that she is also a visual artist? Sarahbeth's gallery debut is slated to take place on December 9th at 5:30 PM at Edgehill Studios where there will be an art debut party thrown in her honor with food, wine, and music. Her work will continue to be displayed at Edgehill until the beginning of February.

Glowing reviews already!

Advance praise for THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG, to be released April 11, 2006, has already come in from a very well respected author in her own right, who had the chance to read an advance copy:

"THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG is an electrifying novel, reading like it could be sung and strummed from an intimate stage in your favorite bar. Always raw, rhythmic, and true, and unmistakably original."

-Jennifer Paddock, author of A SECRET WORD

On a further "glowing review" side note, after posting only two short preview chapters from THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG on Sarahbeth's official myspace site for her readers to enjoy, the chapters became one of the most popular blogs visited on ALL of myspace for two days running. Considering that myspace currently has over 41 million members, this is an especially flattering feat. Keep checking in on this site, readers, as the release date nears. Much more to come!

Lots of Great News!
UPDATE Sarahbeth will be interviewed for PBS /NPT's "A Word on Words" on August 1st at Nashville's Public Television Station. Please see details for air date:

"...invariably, there is more to be discerned from an author's words than what he puts on paper."

Host John Seigenthaler...A Word on Words, one of NPT's signature programs, has been celebrating authors, literature and ideas for close to three decades.

The show is hosted by Nashville's renowned editor and First Amendment advocate, John Seigenthaler, who regularly evokes from his guests fresh evidence that "invariably, there is more to be discerned from an author's words than what he puts on paper." Seigenthaler adds, "Through A Word on Words, I hope to be able to 'get to' authors and to afford them a larger opportunity to 'get to' us."

A Word On Words has included such authors / luminaries as Deepak Chopra and Al Gore, and Sarahbeth couldn't be more pleased to join this past company as a guest of the show.

A Word on Words airs Sunday mornings on PBS (for locals this is usually Channel 8) at 10:30.

Also, just announced:
Sarahbeth is delighted to have been invited to once again be one of the featured authors for the 17th annual Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word, which takes place October 7-9, this time back in its original home in Nashville, Tennessee. There are more than 100 authors confirmed, with many more to go.

Some people aren't aware that although this festival is designed to celebrate the wonderful world of books, it is a multimedia event. The Bluebird Café will sponsor the Festival Café Stage, and the Poetry and Drama Stage will provide a showcase for local playwrights, poets and actors. Monell's Restaurant (known for the South's famous meat 'n three dishes) will be among the food vendors.

As soon as her date and time is confirmed, we will post more information and directions so you can enjoy this one of a kind event in the fall in Sarahbeth's hometown.

June 2004

Sarahbeth is very busy at work on editing and doing rewrites on her second book, with the current working title THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG. Read on for an exclusive sneak preview:

***************************************************************

THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG is a story about human relationships. Friendships, lovers, family. How it all fits together. How it all can pull you apart.

Julia is an intelligent, passionate, and romantic (sometimes to a fault) twenty-something girl in love (and in loss) with her boyfriend, Chase, a charming, witty, perfect-in-just-about-every-way guy who loves Julia dearly, but who also has a fear of commitment and settling down that manifests itself in the need to travel aimlessly. Julia's best friend, Delia, is a moment-to-moment sort, a beautiful twenty something, damaged, jaded and on a path of further self destruction from an upbringing filled with molestation, abuse, and neglect. Her on-again, off-again, Michael, is a quiet type, with anger and violence always bubbling underneath, who seems to want to care fro Delia as much as sometimes he might want to kill her.

The book opens up with a call from Julia to Delia. Chase has left again, and this time, it's probably forever. The story of Chase and Julia's relationship is told in old postcards and letters from Chase to Julia he had sent her from his jaunts to other places before, that Julia kept and now reads over to try and figure out the reasons for his leaving. It is also related in old conversations between Julia and Chase, and new letters that Julia now writes to Chase, although she has no intention or idea on sending them, to give a picture of where she is at, and where she hopes to go.

Delia's adventurous (and sometimes heart wrenching) diary entries are peppered in between these letters, and conversations between best friends Julia and Delia about their own present, their past, and their takes on love and loss also fill the book.

THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG is about the process of living, about how sometimes "living" really is what happens while you're waiting for other events to occur.

***************************************************************

Of course, there are many changes that take place during this part of the process of writing a book, so by the time many of you read or see the book, it just might have a different title, new chapters, new dialog etc. But there it is, for the first time, a preview of what's up next from Sarahbeth and Atria / Simon and Schuster.

Also, for those of you who are fans of trade paperback rather than (or in addition to) hardback books, LOVE IS THE DRUG will be released in softcover in February 2005. More on this release to come as the date nears.

And finally, congratulations goes out to the lucky winner of an autographed copy of LOVE IS THE DRUG, which Sarahbeth recently donated to the charity PETA, (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) for an online auction.

The ebay-style charity auction (http://www.peta.org/feat/springauction) is still being held for those who might be interested in helping out, and benefits the continued medical and daily care of Delhi, a 57-year-old elephant who was stolen from her wild home in India and sentenced to a life of confinement and beatings until PETA rescued her.
